Big Deal
Change, change, change. Well, we got it. The credit rating of the great United States has been downgraded for the first time in history. Gobama, Gobama, Gobama! The media are, of course, all over the downgrade. It's not that big of a deal. Still, I applaud S&P. It fired a shot across the bow of Washington politicians. Let those politicans take notice.
After weeks of bickering, Washington politicians came up with nothing. They cut a deal that is no deal at all. There are some vague references to promised spending cuts "over ten years." Rich people were handed none of the tab. The major issues of the day were left untouched.
Politicians are now doing what they do best: vacationing on the taxpayer dime.
As much as I hate to do it, however, I might find some room to defend our illustrious "leaders." I mean maybe we have met the enemy, and the enemy is us.
If one looks at poll numbers, one finds strong support for an end to government borrowing. One also finds, when people are asked about specifics, no one wants cuts to the big eaters in the budget, like Social Security and Medicare. One also finds a lack of desire to pay more for government services.
You can't have it all, folks. Make up your minds.
